Traffic Troubles

As you may be aware, Ryo-Ohki’s Anime Loft has gone through a sort of identity crisis recently, though not of its own making. This is the reason for the recent downtime of about a week. Full details can be found on my site status page, which is hosted elsewhere for reasons which will become clear once you read it.

To make a long story short, this website recently became a hive of activity from browsers searching for another kind of anime website, due to a similar name. This was attracting attention which I was not interested in getting, since these visitors likely have little to no interest in what my site offers. Therefore, I took the site down for a week so I could hopefully deter these visitors, as well as come up with a plan to reopen the site without attracting that attention back again. I may have found the solution, though it remains early in the evaluation process.

Ryo-Ohki’s Anime Loft is no longer accessible to webcrawlers. This will undoubtedly result in a decrease in people able to find the site by searching for individual anime titles, but the flip side is that when my site’s top page does show in search results now, it is accompanied by my dmoz description rather than an automatically generated excerpt. This description makes it clear that this is primarily a review site, and not the kind of site which hosts what those who were searching for the other material were looking for.

In an attempt to make up for some of the lost visibility due to this tradeoff, I have introduced “share” buttons to the site, which can be found on nearly every post. Now, if there’s a particular post which you enjoy, you can easily share it with others across a host of different services. This is just a new step I am taking to try and ensure that Ryo-Ohki’s Anime Loft remains known as a review site, and not “some blog that keeps showing up when I’m looking for —“.

Thank you for your continued interest in Ryo-Ohki’s Anime Loft, and I hope to remain a helpful source of information as you seek various opinions on anime and manga during your travels across the Web!
